WHY MUSIC
Music is the oldest language, and it’s universal. Studies have revealed humans communicated with pitches and songs prior to developing the verbal languages. The oldest artifact, a flute made from vulture-bone, predates cave drawings. The pitches produced are similar to the human voice. “Music is the language of our souls and is a powerful catalyst for greater peace and love at a time when we desperately need it,” says philanthropic acoustic rock guitarist and event organizer Gregg Hammond. Gregg’s grand vision is to bring the world together for a global symphony by playing The Peace Anthem at the same time. The Global Jam 4 Peace, a celebration of the music inside every person, will take place on the Summer and Winter solstice every year.
ABOUT GREGG HAMMOND
Gregg has performed in Washington, D.C. at venues like DC9, World Famous 930 Club, The Torpedo Factory, and The Hamilton Live. He rocked the stage at Crown of the Continent Guitar Festival, along with well-known guitarists Steve Lukather, Joe Bonamassa, Lee Ritenour, and Dweezil Zappa.
Since moving back to D.C. in 2002 Gregg Hammond has been on a mission to revitalize the music scene which once flourished in Washington. After being jumped by a gang of kids in SW DC Gregg decided to Be The Change he wanted to see in the city streets and began using the power of his mentoring and music lessons. In 2007 he began organizing volunteer efforts to provide guitars and guitar lessons to foster youth and at-risk communities. Students have gone on to perform at venues ranging from open Mic nights, the Howard Theatre Stage, and Washington Post Conference Center, to live on Sirius XM satellite radio, with performances alongside stars like Dweezil Zappa (son of legendary musician Frank Zappa). Gregg also organized Washington, DC’s first Make Music Day.
